Nissan Pathfinder Recall Due to Brake Light Issue

Nissan Pathfinders manufactured from 2013-2015 are being recalled because of a relay switch issue that may leave brake lights continuously illuminated. This means the lights may stay on even if the driver isn’t braking.

Approximately 267,276 Nissan Pathfinders in the U.S. are included in this recall, and it is an expansion of a previous recall (named 16V-380) that only impacted 2013 models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that even Pathfinders that were currently recalled and fixed should be taken into the dealership for an additional repair.

The Cause of the Issue

In recalled vehicles, the relay on the stop lamp switch near the brake pedal may begin to degrade over time. This is especially true in vehicles that often stop and go often. This may cause the switch to stay turned on, resulting in any of the following:

  • Lack of power, limited engine power
  • Brake lights continuously illuminated
  • Being able to shift the vehicle out of “Park” without having to press down on the brakes
  • Engine starting without the brake pedal being pressed down first

If the brake lights are constantly on while driving, other drivers may become confused, increasing the risk of an accident. If a brake override occurs, the driver won’t be able to accelerate normally, potentially resulting in an accident.

No other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles are part of this recall.

Notifying Owners

As of March 1st, 2021, Nissan began notifying owners of the recall. They will fix the issue at no cost to the driver, and any drivers who have previously paid for the fix will be reimbursed. Owners can also call 800-867-7669 and relay the recall number PC786 to see if their vehicle is impacted.
