Class-Action GM Lawsuit for Vortec V8 Oil Consumption

General Motors is facing another class-action lawsuit due to alleged oil consumption issues specifically with the Generation IV 5.3L Vortec V8 engine. Plaintiffs argue that the impacted engines were built with faulty piston rings that don’t keep the oil in the crankcase. As a result, oil levels are low and the heat and friction levels in the engine increase. This could result in internal engine damage, and the engine could shut down completely.
In addition, this lawsuit claims that the pressure relief valve in the engine sprays oil at the piston skirts, resulting in overloading the rings. Oil can then move into the combustion chamber where it is burned.
Finally, plaintiffs also claim that the oil level monitoring system may mislead the driver; it doesn’t alert the driver if the engine oil is reaching a dangerously low point. Impacted vehicles may still produce a warning light that illuminates on the dashboard, but these warnings are not sufficient enough in ensuring the driver is informed.
