Volkswagen is in the process of recalling over 45,000 2018 Tiguan SUV’s due to fire risk. The decorative LED lighting within the vehicle’s panoramic sunroof could potentially short-circuit, partially due to the combination of high humidity and excessive sunlight. This short-circuit issue could cause a fire. After two incidents were reported to Volkswagen, the recall was set in motion.
Anyone that does notice a burning odor or smoke coming from the sunroof frame ought to stop driving and avoid opening the sunroof, as both can increase the risk of fire.
Those that purchased or leased 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV’s that have panoramic sunroofs may be a part of the recall. The vehicle will have had to have been manufactured between December 8, 2016, and July 8, 2018. Fortunately, Volkswagen dealers will be able to fix this issue. Dealers will be able to disconnect the LED light module from its power supply and apply aluminum tape. While the LED lights will not illuminate after this repair, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that the feature can be reactivated after an additional service campaign.
