Following a nearly three-year investigation into a driver’s side seat belt issue, Volkswagen has decided to recall over 10,000 Tiguan SUVs from the 2018 model year.
The Problem
The driver’s side seat belts on 2018 models tore completely during crash testing conducted as a part of the National Highway Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program. In response to these findings, Volkswagen wrote in a letter that it had no awareness of real-world examples of seatbelts failing in this way, nor had it been able to repeat these findings in subsequent tests.
The Solution
Despite no further examples of this flaw being found, the automaker has issued a recall for certain 2018 vehicles. The vehicles included in this recall have seat belt assemblies that were created in the same batch as the torn belts from the NHTSA’s testing. The owners of affected Tiguan SUVs can bring their vehicle to Volkswagen dealers for a free replacement, beginning in January.
