Honda is recalling more than 4.5 million cars worldwide, over 2.5 million in the United States, because of a defect in the fuel pump that could lead to engine failure or stalling in traffic. It had previously recalled over 600,000 vehicle in the U.S. in 2021 and over 130,000 in 2020 for the same issue.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall documents state the impellers inside the fuel pumps of 2017-2020 Honda and Acuras were improperly manufactured, such that they can “deform and interfere with the fuel pump body” over time. This could prevent the engine from starting, or cause a stall while driving, which could lead to a dangerous situation. Honda stated it has not received any reports or crashes or injuries as a result. The recall states that Honda will replace the fuel pump, at no costs to owners. Due to the size of the recall, repair will be done in phases, with first owners receiving notification letters in February.
