Toyota Recalls Nearly 10K Urban Cruiser SUVs

Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. has voluntarily issued a recall affecting almost 10,000 of their vehicles. The Urban Cruiser, a subcompact SUV introduced in September of 2020, is the only model affected by the recall at this time. Toyota offers three trim packages for its Urban Cruiser, Mid, High, and Premium, all three of which are included in the recall.

The recall aims to correct an issue with the driver’s side airbag module assembly. However, Toyota has not released any information about the exact nature of the problem. In total, Toyota’s recall for the Urban Cruiser includes 9,498 units. But the recall only affects vehicles manufactured between July 28, 2020 and February 11, 2021.

The Urban Cruiser is actually manufactured by Maruti Suzuki. Toyota’s subcompact SUV is based on Suzuki’s virtually identical Vitara Brezza. With this in mind, it would make sense for Suzuki to issue a recall for the Vitara Brezza as well. But that vehicle appears to be unaffected by the issue, suggesting that it may include a different driver’s side airbag module.

Authorized Toyota dealers will contact all registered owners of the affected Urban Cruisers in the near future to alert them of the issue. The company has yet to release information about how they plan to correct the issue. But they will provide a resolution at no cost to the owners.
