Ford is recalling 37,000 F-150s because the truck’s automatic braking system could apply the brakes when it’s not supposed to. The problem occurs when the truck is in “adaptive cruise control” mode and its automatic braking system incorrectly senses that there is another vehicle in its lane. Ford said the problem can occur when the pickup passes a large, highly reflective truck. The radar in the automatic braking system can be fooled into thinking that a large truck is in the F-150’s lane and then hit the brakes. The collision-warning system would also activate, flashing red lights and sounding an alarm in the F-150’s cab.
The car manufacturer said it received a report of an accident which caused an injury as a result of this condition, but no deaths have been related to the issue.
