Hyundai Recalls Vehicles Due to Smart Parking Assist Flaw

Beginning June 4, 2020, Hyundai is recalling certain Sonata models and Nexo fuel cell SUVs because of a software issue affecting the Smart Parking Assist feature. When working properly, the feature moves the car into or out of a perpendicular parking space with minor steering adjustments. This feature does not require that a human driver be on board to operate. While conducting routine developmental testing, Hyundai discovered a flaw which caused the vehicle to continue to move even after detecting a fault.

According to Hyundai, the discovery of this software flaw and subsequent testing have shown this software issue to be extremely rare. A March 2020 report confirmed one accident in Korea caused by this malfunction resulting in no injuries. There have been no further reports from within the United States concerning this software issue.

Which Hyundai Models are Affected?

  • 2020 Hyundai Sonata vehicles equipped with the Smart Parking Assist feature, manufactured between October 22, 2019 and March 20, 2020.
  • 2020 Hyundai Nexo fuel cell SUVs equipped with the Smart Parking Assist feature, manufactured between August 16, 2019 and February 18, 2020.

What Can Vehicle Owners Do?

Before any action can be taken, you will need to confirm whether your vehicle is impacted by the recall. The easiest way to do that is to visit the NHTSA’s website and enter your 17-digit VIN number. Hyundai dealers will be performing a free software update to fix this problem. If you have any questions or comments for the manufacturer, Hyundai can be reached at 855-371-9460.
