Toyota is recalling 44,000 vehicles over a manufacturing error that causes a crack to form in the engines of certain models. Engines that develop this crack are at risk of leaking coolant or oil, which can result in a number of problems, including engine stalling, overheating, and fires.
The models that are being recalled feature Toyota’s 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine. The recall includes the 2020 Camry, 2020 Camry hybrid, and the 2020 Avalon hybrid. Both 2019 and 2020 RAV4 and RAV4 hybrids are included in the recall, along with the 2020 Lexus ES300H. A majority of the impacted vehicles are 2019 and 2020 RAV4 crossovers.
Dealers Will Replace Engines Free of Charge
To determine if your vehicle has been impacted by this recall, you can visit the NHTSA recall site and enter your 17-digit VIN number. Owners can then bring their vehicle into a Toyota dealer for service. The dealer will check the engine’s serial number against Toyota’s data to determine if it was part of the affected batch. While the full recall includes 44,191 total vehicles, Toyota anticipates that a vast majority will not be affected by the manufacturing error in question. If your vehicle is found to have this flaw, the engine (along with the engine block) will be fully replaced at no cost. The company estimated that only 250 cars from the recall will need their engines replaced.
