BMW has issued a recall for approximately 184,000 cars for an electrical short that can cause fires. The company says this problem is the result of production irregularities in the heating element for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve, which is designed to keep the system from freezing.
The electrical contacts of the PCV valve are coated with plastic material. Irregularities in the manufacturing process could allow moisture to build up near the PCV valve heater and lead to a short circuit.
Cars Affected
This recall affects a total of 184,505 vehicles, including certain 3 Series, 5 Series, and Z4 cars from the 2006 model year. BMW says these problems are very rare and warns customers to stop driving if there is smoke coming from the engine compartment, or if the driver smells anything burning.
BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries caused by the problem and has been notifying drivers of the issue since early June. Dealers will replace the heater at no cost to owners.
