Dozens of owners have complained about particular Hyundai and Kia vehicles, including Hyundai Sonata, the Kia Optima sedans, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUVs, Kia Sorento and Sportage SUVs. Over 168,000 vehicles have been recalled.
These vehicles haven’t been repaired correctly under a prior recall, which may result in a fuel leak that increases the risk of a fire. Many customers have reported spontaneous engine fires that are not related to crashes in the listed vehicles.
While Hyundai and Kia are run as separate business units, they are run under the same corporation meaning that their cars share parts, design and engineering. All affected vehicles have 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines that were replaced during a 2017 recall to fix engine knocking and stalling.
Center for Auto Safety (CAS) Complaints
The Center for Auto Safety is a consumer watchdog group that filed a formal petition with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to investigate the fire complaints. There were 120 complaints in the database that noted fires starting without a collision. At least six people have been injured due to the fires starting.
