Ford Recalls 680,000 Vehicles Due To Faulty Seat Belts

Ford Motor Company recalled 680,872 vehicles, 602,729 of which are located in the United States, after determining the front driver and passenger seat belts may not function properly. The recalled vehicles are model year 2013 – 2016 Fusions, 2015 – 2016 Mondenos, and 2013 – 2015 Lincoln MXZs. The affected vehicles may be equipped with a seat belt anchor that could prevent the occupant from being restrained in a crash.

When working properly, a pre-tensioner tightens the seat belt in the event of a crash, securing the passenger or driver from moving forward in their seats. Ford said that this feature is not working in some of the recalled vehicles. Rather, increased temperatures generated during the activation of the seat belt anchor pre-tensioner could cause the device cables to separate. If this occurs during a crash, the passengers and drivers may not be properly restrained, increasing the chance of injury. Ford stated it is aware of two incidents and two injuries associated with this issue.

To fix the issue, Ford will instruct dealers to inject a conformal coating into the seatbelt anchor pre-tensioner to protect the cables from increased temperatures generated during deployment, at no cost to the customer.
