Tesla recalls almost 130,000 vehicles for overheating touchscreens

Tesla is recalling nearly 130,000 vehicle due to a hardware overheating issue that can lead to problems with the control screen. The recall applies to 2021-2022 Model S, Model X and 2022 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Those vehicles have firmware that allows the infotainment CPU to overheat while preparing the vehicles’ batteries for fast-charging.

According to the NHTSA report, “During fast-charging or preparation for fast-charging, the infotainment central processing unit (‘CPU’) may not cool sufficiently to prevent higher than expected temperatures, which may cause the CPU to slow processing or restart. Slower processing or restarted processing could cause the center screen display to lag or appear blank.” This issue could cause the rearview camera display, windshield visibility control settings, drive modes such as Drive, Neutral or Reverse to be unavailable, which may increase the risk of a crash. Tesla began sending the updated firmware to the affected vehicles with an over-the-air update that was made available on May 3, 2022.
