Kia Minivans and SUVs Recalled Due to Fire Risk

Kia has issued 228,000 Sedona minivans and Sorento SUVs due to concerns about them catching fire. The issue revolves around moisture that could get into the antilock brake system’s electronics, resulting in a short circuit and increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire. This is still possible even when the impacted vehicles are parked and turned off.

Kia is unaware of how the moisture is getting into the ABS electronics. Thus far there have been two Sedona and five Sorento fire-related customer complaints. The car company is unaware of injuries related to this problem. Owners with defective vehicles are instructed to park their vehicles outdoors in a location a safe distance away from other vehicles until the issue has been repaired.

Vehicles Affected

Specific vehicles impacted include 2006-2010 Sedona minivans that were manufactured from June 15, 2005, through July 15, 2009. Some Sorento SUVs that were manufactured from June 15, 2006, through December 15, 2008 may also be impacted.

The Fix

Kia is installing a relay in the main junction box of the vehicle which prevents the power from being directed to the brake system’s ABS electronics. If there are additional repairs related to this problem, Kia will reimburse drivers for these expenses.
