Chevrolet Silverado & GMC Sierra Pickups Recalled Again

Approximately 148,055 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks from the 2019 model year have been recalled again due to a software update that was caught in a previous recall. However, the original recall contained flawed software that could potentially illuminate warning lamps despite there not being a problem.

The Initial Recall

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration initially brought attention to this issue through recall number 19V889 that addressed a software malfunction. The antilock brake system (ABS), brakes and electronic stability control system (ESC) may not illuminate properly. This causes the driver to be unaware if these systems are inoperable. A combination of unsold vehicles and sold customer vehicles received this software update in December 2019 and January 2020 before initial recall notices were sent out.

The New Recall

GM’s My Brand app is the cause of the new recall, as there is a flaw when owners try to use the app to start their vehicles remotely. In the case that drivers use this app to start their car, multiple warnings illuminate on the dashboard, including ABS and ESC.

There have been no reported accidents or injuries relating to either recall, and customers will receive two recall notices; one for the initial recall and one to fix the initial recall.

The Fix

General Motors is in the process of notifying owners and both Chevrolet and GMC dealers will install any necessary updates free of charge.
