The failure of a faulty engine block heater cord is causing GM to recall nearly 325,000 heavy-duty trucks. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) explains that the failure can increase the risk of a vehicle fire.

Why Is This Important?

Engine block heaters plug into an external power outlet and warm the engine, which makes starting the engine easier in colder weather. The engine block heater cord or the terminals that connect the heater cord to the engine block heater can short-circuit and fail, leading to the potential of a fire.

What Should You Know?

Over 324,000 heavy-duty pickup trucks have been recalled, including:

  • 2017 to 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500: Trucks manufactured from July 18, 2016 through April 18, 2019
  • 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 4500, 5500, 6500: Commercial trucks manufactured from May 23, 2018 through April 19, 2019
