Toyota Recalls 807,000 Prius’ Over Stall Issue

Toyota has announced a recall of around 807,000 Prius and Prius V vehicles over a potential stalling issue. This recall involves 2010-2014 Prius and 2012-2014 Prius V model years. Essentially, the problem could cause the Prius’ to lose power and stall. While the power steering and braking remain completely operational, if a vehicle were to stall while driving, this increases the risk of a crash.

While Toyota believes this issue is rather rare, they are still recalling the 807,000 vehicles. The stall issue stems from how their hybrid systems react if any problems happen. If these problems do occur, such as the system overheats, they are supposed to enter a failsafe driving mode. However, these vehicles may not actually enter this failsafe mode, leading to the loss of power and stalling.

Toyota did not confirm nor deny that there have been any crashes because of this issue.

Toyota is able to fix this issue, free of charge, by updating the software of the vehicles at a Prius dealer. Previously, there were recalls regarding the Prius failsafe mode, but this recall is separate.
