Refrigerator Recall

Consumer Law Center-Not just Maytag refrigerators were recalled today. Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa and Crosley brands are all on the list of 1.6 million refrigerators to be issued recalls due to potential fire damage. Maytag officials announce more than 40 reports of overheating, including 16 that resulted in property and smoke damage. Since 2001 there have been 41 reports of relay ignitions. The recall affects side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators that were sold between January 2001 and January 2004. The fire hazard can occur when an electrical failure in the units’ relay (the part that turns on the compressor) results in overheating. Recall parts will become available March 17th, consumers may contact any store in advance to reserve these parts.
